Unfortunately, Liam was diagnosed at age 3 1/2 with an Auto Immune Disease called Chronic Granulomatous Disease (CGD).  It is a disease in which Liam's body cannot fight off bacteria or fungi.  If Liam's body comes in contact with such things, he gets extremely sick and is normally hospitalized and medicated to help fight off the infection.  This type of disease is extremely rare and there are only 400 known cases worldwide.  Liam takes daily medications to help protect him against environmental things in which we can't control.  There is only one possible cure for CGD and that is a stem cell transplant.  We are hopeful that Liam will get a perfect match in which he deserves.  When his match is confirmed, he will undergo a stem cell transplant as early as spring/ 2011.  Liam's long term prognosis can be potentially fatal and to transplant earlier in life is safer.
As you can imagine, this process is extremely hard on our family as we are trying to save our little boy and have him cured of an ugly disease.  In order to have this transplant done, Liam and his mom will have to relocate to Bethesda, Maryland due to the fact that's where Liam's specialists are.  We will be there for a minimum of 4 months without family or friends in a nearby distance.  Liam's dad will travel back and forth on weekends as we still have 3 other children at home that need parents to help them understand what is going on.
When it comes to the financial aspect, our focus really needs to be on our son and helping him to recover from this exhausting time in his life.  Of course, there is a financial burden weighing on our minds.  We can use any help that we receive.  We will be accepting donations in order to help Liam and his family get through this. We, Liam's mom and dad, are asking that you share Liam's story and keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

I'm writing on behalf of Unite for HER, a nonprofit organization, to tell you about a breast cancer grant we offer to USAG women's artistic members. I've attached a recent press release, the grant criteria and application. We are asking each chairperson to pass on this important information to clubs in your state. We need the help of the entire gymnastics community to spread the word about this grant so we can get the funds to the gymnasts and their families who have been affected by breast cancer and would benefit from financial assistance. Information is currently available on the USA Gymnastics website (Women's page), or you can visit the Pink Invitational website (http://www.pinkinvitational.com). Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Thank you in advance for your support!

The time to help University of California, Berkeley men's gymnastics is now!

CAL Mens PageUSA Gymnastics has been in  contact with the administration of the University of
California, Berkeley,  and the Cal Gymnastics Forever Foundation, which has launched an impressive initiative to help men's gymnastics at Cal. At this time, we urge you to support the efforts of Cal Gymnastics Forever. The organization has raised more than $44,000 and received more than 100 letters of support. The leadership of Cal Gymnastics Forever is developing a business plan to present to the University next week, and they plan to include all letters of support, along with a summary of donations and financial pledges.

The details and links for online donations and letters of support are available through the group's website, www.calgymnasticsforever.com, or its Facebook page. The Cal Gymnastics Forever team has made it very easy to submit your letters, including an online "auto-create" letter system that only needs you to enter your name and contact information and click a button.

Please submit your letters and your pledges now so that your voice will be heard. The gymnastics family has shown repeatedly what can be accomplished when we join forces, and we would appreciate everyone's joining the effort to save this historic and storied program.

Thank you in advance for your generosity and for helping us make sure the men's Cal gymnastics team celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2012.

Regards,

Peter Vidmar   Steve Penny

7/2/2010       UPDATE

USAG-Illinois NEEDS your help!

USA Gymnastics has again selected Chicago to host a Nationally televised gymnastics meet, the Cover Girl Classic being held from July 22-25th, 2010 at the UIC Pavillion.  This is the second prestigious artistic gymnastic event to be held here in Chicago in 2 years (we hosted the American Cup at the Sears Centre in February of 2009).  This is also the last qualifying meet to the USAG Visa Championships, which is our National Championships, and this is both an International Competition as well as a Junior competition.

We are in need of at least 40 volunteers on Thursday, July 22nd starting at 10:00am through approx. 4:00-6:00pm at the UIC Pavillion to set up the podium first, then the equipment.  We then need 40 volunteers to tear down the equipment after the event is over on Sunday July 25th starting at about 4:00pm to load the equipment back on the trucks and tear down and load the podium.  We would GREATLY appreciate your assistance in this task!  We are looking for coaches, parents judges, and athletes aged 14+ to help us out.

All we would need is for ANY volunteer to sign-up at the following link:
Click here: :: USA Gymnastics :: 2010 CoverGirl Classic ::  and click on the "Sign up now" button on the right side below VOLUNTEERS.

They will then be contacted by either myself or Cindy Moreno with further information.  As a thank you for their help, we are attempting to confirm that volunteers will be able to use their credentials to enter the arena for free during any of the competitions and watch the events from a designated seating area for volunteers.  This is not confirmed yet, however this has been allowed in the past.

Thank you so much for your time and for your assistance in this matter.  We look forward to putting on another remarkable event here in Chicago and hope that our hard work and dedication continues to bring us these meets, and hopefully a future National Championship competition!  I look forward to seeing you at the Classic!
