Memorandum

To:  All USAG, NAWGJ officers
RE:   Clarification on raising scores at State Meet
DATE: 10/15/05

Confusion has arisen on the procedures for raising a score at the end of a State meet to qualify the gymnast to the Regional Championships. (Usually the gymnast is very close to qualifying.. .up to 0.1 0)

Please refer to page 44 of the Rules and Policies.
J. Inquiry Regulations #3. "Inquiries must be submitted to the Meet Director or Meet Referee within 5 minutes of the completion of the squad's competition on that event. JJ

If the inquiry results in a score change, that score must be reflected in the official results which determine the medal/award placement.

The confusion is this: In some areas of the country, the score has been changed AFTER the awards are given, thus allowing the gymnast to qualify to the next competition, but not receive the appropriate award. This is an incorrect procedure and must not continue.

The decisions made by the National Committees are outlined in the Rules and Policies. No committee has the authority to alter the Rules and Policies for matters that are above State Level.

Please publish this clarification in your next newsletter so all coaches and judges are informed and the athletes are assured of equality across the country.

Thanks for your assistance.

Level 6 & 7 State Meet Update

The Level 6, 7 State Championship Meet Facility was not damaged by the recent storms and tornadoes that recently passed through Springfield. Also the Hotels on the State meet list were not effected.  If your athletes are in other hotels they should check with the hotels to confirm whether they were or were not damaged.
Midstate Gymnastics presently does not have electricity and is closed due to some Roof damage but will have no effect on the 6, 7 State Championships.  At present they also do not have Telephone service so Keep your eye on the Midstate website for further information on meet proceedings.

Level 7 Beam Clarification

There have been some questions regarding the acro special requirement for Level 7 Beam.

Part of the acro requirement is a series with a minimum of 2 “A” or “B” elements with or without flight. One of the elements must pass through an inverted vertical position while in support on the hands (handstand).

It also states that roll elements may be included in the series provided that the other element passes through a handstand position.

The series in question is a kick up to handstand, then step back down to immediate backward roll (either stepping down onto one foot or onto two feet to initiate the roll).

The confusion lies in the words “passes through a handstand position”, as some people interpreted that to mean a kick-up to handstand and step-down would not fulfill a “passing through vertical” element.

I spoke with both Cheryl Hamilton and Tom Koll regarding this specific connection. We all agree that the original intent when we changed Level 7 to an optional level was to keep the difficulty requirements similar to what was expected in the old Level 7 compulsory routine.  That was why we allowed them to continue to use a handstand in the series, whereas the other levels may not.

We will try to clarify this at the May committee meetings by changing “passes through vertical” to “achieves vertical” or something similar as the intent was to consider the handstand as an element that goes through (to) vertical.

Therefore, provided that the connection from the step down from the handstand into the backward roll is continuous, this would be a legitimate connection for Level 7 gymnasts

If this has been a problem in your state/regions, please distribute this information by posting on your web site or by direct e-mail to judges and coaches.

Thanks you.
